Increase Performance, Increase Productivity, Reduce Abrasive
Costs
In today's wide belt polishing and grinding plants, Menges Roller
Company has discovered that the technical parameters of durometer
land groove ratios, rubber compound selections, and balance
specifications of contact rolls are confusing even to the most
experienced technical personnel. Improper selection of contact roll
specifications can cost you in production speed, abrasive costs,
undesirable stock removal, and poor finishes. We can manufacture a
new roll for you as a complete core and covering, or we can recover
your existing rolls. It's time to give the experts at Menges Roller
Company a chance to show you what our consistent quality can mean to
your bottom line. |
Some things to consider
If this was anatomy class, and you had to show us the living heart of
your grinding or polishing equipment, you would undoubtedly point to your
contact rollers. If we were then asked to show the heart of the contact
roll itself, it would be the rubber covering. We have over 30 years of
experience matching the best rubber compounds to the harshest environments
in the industry today.
Durometers hardness.
Measurement of the hardness of rubber is very important.
SOFT DUROMETERS -
(15-50 Shore A Scale) Roll coverings are used when
aggressive stock removal is not of primary concern, but even processing of
an irregular surface may be the primary objective or for generating finer
finishes.
MEDIUM DUROMETERS -
(60-80 Shore A Scale) These durometers can be
used to try and avoid a median between hard and soft durometers. These
rolls will achieve good stock removal rates while still conforming to
slight irregularities in the contour of the work surface.
HARD DUROMETERS -
(85-95 Shore A Scale) This is used for aggressive
stock removal or when precision tolerances are critical.
A guide for figuring land-groove ratios
It is very important to processing that the ratio you choose be
perfectly maintained across the entire roll face. Any widening or
narrowing of groove or land across the face will produce nightmarish
results for the finisher. We can give you the right configuration for your
needs.

Finding the angle of serration or grove.
For proper selection of the angle of serration, stand at either end of
the roll and see which direction the grooves are going (from top to
bottom). Grooves and serrations that go to the left are left handed, and
those going to the right are right handed. The angle of serration should
run opposed to the splice in the abrasive belt, minimizing the belt joint
area from coming in contact with the land on the contact roll. This will
reduce marking of you work, and will ensure a rapid cut rate.
- 1.60 degree of serration is the maximum practical angle. Used
for heavy stock removal and where finish marks are of no concern. Belt
life will be greatly reduced, but a rapid cut rate is enhanced.
- 2.45 degree is a very standard serration for a wide variety
of applications. Gives a good stock removal rate and a suitable finish.
- 3.30 degree is used where a better finish is needed. It will
be less likely to generate marks with reasonable stock removal rates.
- No serration (plain faced) is used almost exclusively for
polishing and fine finishing, Minimal stock removal
We will finish your job with high-speed 2-plane dynamic
balancing.
We will ensure your finished rolls balance with our high-speed dynamic
balancing machine. More often than not, improper balancing will be the
reason for chatter or finishing problems you encounter. Every time your
roller is recovered and regrooved, the balance can be thrown out of spec.
The need for this final balancing is extremely important to a worry free
roll. We balance at your operating speed, please specify working RPM when
ordering.
